Long May It Wave

A big thank you to all the men, women and who have served and are serving our country. Special prayers for their families who won't get to spend a long weekend with their loved ones.

As we celebrate our long weekend with family picnics, heading for the lake, or just working around the house let's remember the heroes who make this possible.

Please pray for our men and women who serve us here and overseas.

Peony Anyone?

The sun is finally shining. It has been in the high 80's for the last three days. While it's so nice would you like to go out to the garden and smell the Peonies?


The white one is so pristine against the dark green foliage.

Isn't this bright pink stunning with the yellow and pink stamen? The flowers are so large you need two hands to hold it.

The pink with white tipped petals is stunning.

The light pink with a lighter pink center looks like a butterfly floating on the breeze.

Many of the peonies didn't survive all the wind and rain we had the last week. But all of them smell so yummy when I bring in a bouquet.

It's Called Progress

I am sure the city calls it progress, but I, call it a mess. For the past four months this sign has been posted just to the east of our home. Each morning at 6:00 a.m. the machines begin to snort, roar, gouge and pound.


The city in it's wisdom has decided that our quiet street would make a great access to the freeway for an on and off ramp.


The have taken up all the blacktop and are widening the road to four lanes.

Previously we had a sidewalk just on the east side of our property that has an orchard. They have dug up most of it for some unknown reason.

The area directly in front of our house was all grass. If you look closely you
can see a stake in the background. This is the right of way we had to agree to give them as working space. As you can see the workmen curved around my wheel barrow flower bed and left it intact. I don't know if will remain as it looks like they are ready to lay a sidewalk across this area. It seems my flowers will probably be in the way of the sidewalk. I am waiting for that knock on the door.

Because I knew I might have to move the wheelbarrow I didn't even bother to paint it this year.

But until that day come I will continue to enjoy my flowers and thank the workman who cared enough about flowers to leave my bed intact. for at leasst the time being. Things change.

Rain, Rain, Go Away

I have had company for the last week. My SIL and her sister were visiting from Colorado and California. They are both avid gardeners so I had planned outings to the Loose Park Rose Garden and Powell Gardens. If you visit Kansas City both of these are must see places if you love gardens. However, the weather had other plans. It rained all the time they were here.

We did make a couple of excursions to garden centers. It was very interesting to my SIL's trunk loaded full with plants on their way to Colorado. And the rain continues today.

So now I have plants sitting in cardboard boxes waiting for the rain to cease.

My red climbing roses have braved the rain and burst into bloom despite no sunshine.

Isn't it a shame this rose only blooms once a year? Each spring I wait anxiously for it's yearly display.

I did get a couple of pots planted and with the all the rain they caught hold nicely. They are calling for rain again tomorrow. Oh please, just a couple of days of sunshine is all I ask.

Serendiptous Find

I have been searching high and low and racking my brain for an inexpensive way to put art on the large wall in the basement we just finished.

In the shopping center near us we have what used to be a great antique mall but is now more a second hand store and flea market. After I finished my grocery shopping I thought I would take a quick run thought to see what I couldn't live without.

I spotted a pile of pictures leaning against a wall and what attracted my attention was the large size and the frames were already black. Good, maybe I could just replace the pictures with some great posters.

Ladies, I don't need to do a thing. The pictures probably wouldn't be my first choice but I can live with them.

All the colors are perfect for the room.

I thought this one would look nice above the table. Look how well the colors blend with the material on the chairs.

I thought the second one would look great above this bench.

Now all I have to do is get my hubby to hang them for me.

Not only are they the perfect color and size they were $19.95 each.

What more can a girl ask for?

Happy Mother's Day to all. I hope your day is filled with love and laughter.

Chummy Clematis

I start most of my perennials from inexpensive little pots and wait patiently ( well sometimes not so patiently) for them to grow up.


My clematis have bloomed for the last three years but this year they are glorious. All the colors are twined together and are putting on a grand show.


The white clematis blooms about two weeks earlier than the purple and pink but she is still going strong.






Love how all three colors are mingling here.

The photo doesn't do the royal purple color of this flower justice.

This is new one I planted last year. I has a much smaller flower and it is shaped similar to a dahlia. The center is a very deep maroon and the color contrast makes a very striking color combo.

I once read somewhere that you have to have patience for perennials. It is said the first year they sleep, the second year they creep and the third year they leap. These were well worth waiting for.
