I need to know if Southerns and Mid-Westerners are the only people that make cukes and onions in vinegar, sugar, and water. I was just talking to a friend on the East coast and she was making Oh Yuk noises. I grew up eating these on a Montana ranch but my grandmother was born and raised in Missouri.
So I would like to hear from you all where you grew up and if you ate this dish.
Have a great weekend.

I remember by grandmother making this, I must try it again. I love onions, cukes and vinegar LOL. I am Canadian in Ontario
I'm from New York and I've never heard of this before, but it doesn't sound 'Oh, Yuck' to me, it actually sounds very interesting and something I'd like to try! Thanks for posting it!
All the best,
Eileen
I grew up eating it and 61 years later I'm STILL eating it and still lovin' it. Wednesday, I brought home a bunch of cukes from my mom and dad's garden and right into the vinegar bath they went. The more onions and vinegar, the better. Grew up right here in NE Wisconsin.
Hello Stella;;; Oh My Gosh!!!! I just Love Love them, my Mom used to make them when I was little, and now I make them for my family... I grew up in Indiana, now live in North Carolina. Now I am hungry for them....lol
have a great weekend.

Are you kidding me?? :-) I grew up eating cukes and onions like this. When I prepare it now, I use Marukan Rice Vinegar and some Splenda and marinate the cukes and onions in it! It's scrumptious.
We eat something very similar. I grew up in CT and am still eating cucumber salad in NYC. Thanks for stopping by Buttercup's.
I'm from Michigan and have never heard of this. Are you just marinating the veggies in the vinegar? =)
I love those but never knew how to make them...I'm in California so I think people all over the country like these. They are delicious!
I am from Virginia and we do it this way. Cukes, Onions,Vinegar and salt and pepper and a wee bit of sugar but sometimes NO sugar.
Yum yum! Maybe it is a 'location' thing or a family thing. I grew up in Alberta, Canada on a little farm, and my mom always make various kinds pickles with cucs, tomatoes and other veggies from her huge garden. I always loved the smell of vinegar, sugar and spices boiling atop the stove.
