Red Shoes

As a child born just after the depression I spent my summers going barefoot and new shoes were purchased when it was time to go back to school. So that they would last through the winter there was always plenty of toe room and a style that was tough enough to take lots of hard wear. This meant they were oxford style shoes in either black or brown. Oh my, how my little girl heart would pine for the bright red Mary Jane's in the store window.

So I wrote a little something for those of you who's little girl heart longed for a pair of red shoes and still leaps at the sight of just that right pair of shoes.

Red Shoes

I woke up this morning
and jumped out of bed.
I looked at the sky
it was all yellow and red.

I said to myself
I know what I'll do.
I will go and show Nena
My brand new school shoes.

I pulled on my jeans
slipped on a pink sweater.
Cuddling my new shoes
I was set for my journey.

I said to myself
I know what I'll do.
I will take the path
through the woods
and carry my shoes.

The leaves were so bright
they glowed in the sun.
I stopped at the creek
to squish mud through my toes.

Then I washed in the creek
so cold and so clear.
Then I hopped on one foot
to see how far I could go.

Soon through the trees
Nena's house I could see.
With pretty green shutters
and Nena waiting for me.

We talked about school
and my new friend Ann.
Then I showed her my shoes.
And she said Oh! My!

The toes are so shiny
so pretty and new.
Yes, red is just
the right color for you.

My closet in now filled with shoes of every hue that still make my heart sing. Some I haven't been able to wear for awhile because the heels are too high. But soon.

I hope each of you has some small thing that makes your heart sing.

HI SWEETIE!!!
Shoes are a passion of ALL girls!!!My Granny LOVED shoes of every color too, high heels made her feel special and she loved them, My Mom never really had a passion for fashion, maybe because she had 3 daughters and 1 son, but the 3 daughters were more then a financial burden for her, she got far more joy out of dressing us 3 girls then she ever would have gotten buying for herself, sounds like all MOM'S huh???
I myself love shoes, but It is NOT the MOST fav thing of mine, I like cute frilly things, my weakness is a cute sweater with a flair all it's own!!!'
I LOVED your poem and it sure touched my heart and made me think of my Granny and My Momma!!
have a great day
hugs,
jamie

Stella, reading your poem has gotten my morning off to a happy start.

Not so many shoes in my closet. Shoe shopping is not a fun event when one has bunions. I do luv red shoes and red purses though.

Lots of little things make my heart sing, but I can't write such a lovely poem about them.

I can relate to the once a year school shoes -- my time too. (Once my little brother threw one of his shoes out of the wagon mom was pulling us in -- no luck finding it, she cried for days. I can't remember if they were able to buy him a new pair or not. I think shoes were rationed in those WWII days.

May you be back to your colorful heels soon ;>)

Stella, this poem really touched my ♥! I remember having to wear those clunky old black & white oxfords that lasted F-O-R-E-V-E-R they were so durable.

I used to kick mine way under the bed & just before leaving for school, tell my mother I couldn't find my shoes. I'd then have to wear my pretty black patent leather Sunday shoes. :-D
Thanks for jogging that memory!

Regarding my hand-painted glass bowls. I honestly don't know if they can go through the dishwasher, as I've always just done them by hand to be safe. If I could find the paint I used on them, it might tell me, but I can't seem to locate it at the moment. I will let you know if I find out.
Thanks for stopping by.
fondly,
Rett
