Old Friends

Last week we attended the funeral (we seem to be doing this a lot lately) of one of my husband's best friend's mother. As I watched my husband and his two best friends talking and laughing I was struck by how life long friends are so woven into the fabric of our lives.Because I was an army brat I haven't retained any friends from my school years. But my husband has had these two best friends since he was 9 or 10.

D, B, and Hubby

These three guys spent their preteen days hunting in the fields around their homes with a BB gun. Later during their teen years cruising drive-ins. During our young married lives we took all of our kids and spent our weekends camping at the lake in a huge circle. Today we don't seem to see each as much. B, the one on the left has had throat cancer but seems to be in remission. D, the one in the middle has suffered four strokes and has lost the use of one arm and has great difficulty walking. As I watched them enjoy each others company it seemed I should grab a photo. We never know when one of this trio might leave us.

This is D and his bride of 45 years. She is his angel he says. She takes such care of him since his stroke and meets his every need. They are extra special to us and they stood up with us when we were married 44 years ago.

My husband is my special friend too. Who else but a best friend would take a girl hunting for squirrel on their honeymoon. You know I thought it was so special I even carried the squirrel he bagged.
So if you have some life long friends why don't you give them a call or drop by to see them. In this mobile, busy society old friends should be cherished.

Oh Stella, what a beautiful heartwarming story and blog. There is just nothing like friends - I think they are gift's from God. Your hubby is a lucky man too - tell him I said that.

G'day, my friend ~
Today, the moment, is the joy we should treasure ...

I didn't bother to maintain friends from school ... in our military moves I gave up trying to keep close friends.

Happy spring. Have a beautiful week.
Hugs, Marydon

That was a lovely post!! So true too!! My husband will be 60 later in the year, and it suddenly occurred to me that we are the front line troops in our family!! Frightening!! Even more reason to enjoy life and see family and friends often!!

Really sweet! It does seem that every time I pick up the paper, a school friend has died! It's shocking to see so many my age dying! Since I've lived in the same town all my life, I see it all too often!

That's so strange because we've just recently found some friends from 40 years ago...or I should say they've found us through a old military friends sight, honey. Hubs was ecstatic because they remembered things he didn't and showed pictures of him he'd never seen before. A true delight for sure, chickee...

Oh boy you are so right, I have some high school friends I talk to online, but I have not seen face to face in quite a few years, some do not live in AZ anymore, but some do, and I just might organize a luncheon for us!!!! Thanks for that push!!!!Great old friends are the best though, I have a few friends from my church youth group who we still see at least a few times a year!!!! My hubby's best buddy from high school, our kids grew up calling him Uncle Lance!!!! Still do!!!!!His wife became Aunt Kathy!!!!
I loved seeing the pics and reading your story, it shows how IN love you are still with your darling hubby!!!!

that was such a charming
post.

my husband has kept all
his highschool and college
friends. i cherish them all,
and they love me too.

it's so silly for women to
begrudge their husband's
friendships.

What a lovely post. My husband has friends here that he went to Elementary school with. Growing up, my family moved every three years so I haven't kept in contact with anyone from my childhood. They say the best antiques are old friends. Fortunately, there are some friends we meet along the way that it seems like we've known forever and I call them sisters of my heart! Wishing you a day of joy and blessings, Tammy

What a beautiful story and perhaps a reminder that life is too short, so live each day to its fullest and don't forget your friends. I also wanted to say, thanks for entering my giveaway, but oops, won't be sending any cake, I ate it all up. Have a good day.

It is interesting that I have reflected on friendships today too. My one regret is that I have not collected good friends from childhood because our family moved so much.
